Oh no, Furlough

Glen Smith

Updated: Jul 21, 2021

I might be wrong.. it happened once last year.. but is the furlough scheme now a bit redundant? Once hospitality opens up, and travel is back on its feet, I can't think of a reason we still need it, yet it's here until September.

The effect it seems to have had is that many candidates are happily sat on the scheme, leaving a shortage of candidates actively looking for work, and creating a massively 'candidate led' market. Now, as a candidate this is grrrreat. There is less competition for roles, and you can accept three different ones, and then not bother to turn up for two of them without letting anybody know, as if they were chocolate bars in a vending machine. Courteous.

When furlough rules change in July, and companies have to start paying 10% of the candidate's salary to keep them on furlough, I guess it will mean a lot are released back into the wild, and the number of candidates in competition for each role will increase. Good for companies looking to recruit in terms of talent options.
